It is the responsibility of the student to choose the determinations so all of the following objectives are achieved. In the event that some objectives have not been met, the grade of the student will be lowered in respect to the magnitude of the objective neglected. A particular unknown determination may fulfill several objectives. Many of the objectives may be met by more than one unknown. The final Real Life Sample may be used to meet some of the objectives.

1. Analyze an unknown potassium acid phthalate sample for percent KHP.

2. Analyze three Thorn Smith Unknowns by two or more analytical methods (you may not use the unknown potassium acid phthalate to fulfill this objective).

3. Analyze an ore sample for one element by two methods.

4. Analyze two real life samples by one method each. Antacid is one of these.

5. Use the technique of back titration in the analysis of one unknown.

6. Analyze one unknown where the standard and the unknown are treated alike.

7. In one titrimetric method, use a primary standard.

8. Use the method of aliquots in the determination of one unknown.

9. Use a method requiring a buffer.

10. Analyze an unknown using a titrimetric determination using a strong oxidant (KMnO4, K2Cr2O7) titrant, an iodimetric, or iodometric method.

11. Analyze an unknown using a gravimetric precipitation method that requires filtration.

12. Perform a titrimetric determination of an unknown using a complex forming reagent (consider EDTA).

13. Perform the analysis of an unknown using an acid-base visual indicator.

14. Perform a precipitation titration for the analysis of an unknown.

15. Use the techniques of solvent extraction, ion exchange or precipitation to separate the substance sought before the final measurement is made by a second technique. (This is one type of sample pre-treatment.) Determinations that meet this objective include: Volhard Chloride, Iodometric Cooper, and some real life projects.

16. Use either a molecular or atomic spectrophotometric method for the analysis of one unknown.

        17. Use at least two instrumental techniques. Possible methods include:
        electrodeposition, molecular spectrophotometry, atomic spectrophotometry.
  18. Analyze one substance that is a possible environmental pollutant.
